Abstract

543,145. Contacting solids and gases. FRASER, R. P., and BLYTHE, G. E. K. June 7, 1940, No. 9999. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] In the gaseous chemical treatment of granular or powdered material the charge is fed through an inlet A<SP>1</SP> on to sector shaped trays B secured round a rotary shaft C, the trays at one level being staggered with, respect to those at the next lower level, and air is supplied through a pipe E and is heated by contact with steam heated finned pipes F; F<SP>1</SP>, F<SP>2</SP>, and is passed through nozzles into the trays. This air heats the material on the trays and escapes through perforations on the floor of the trays in jets which play on to the material on the roofs of the trays next below, and entrain the surrounding air, the air passing upwards in zig-zag fashion to an outlet A<SP>2</SP>. Steam inlet and outlet pipes G, G<SP>5</SP> supply heat to the finned pipes which are arranged in groups so that the most highly heated air meets the freshly charged material. The air supply to the two lowermost platforms goes to the trays without being heated, and serves to cool the material. Each platform has a stationary spreading blade and a stationary scraping blade by which the material is swept off on to the next tray below until it falls out at the base A', from which it is removed.
