[Class 59] A jaw type crusher has a frame structure, a normally fixed jaws supported by said frame, a movable jaw disposed for co-operation with the fixed jaw and defining therebetween a crushing chamber, said movable jaw being pivoted at one end for movement toward and away from the fixed jaw, means for imparting oscillatory movement to said movable jaw connected to the other end thereof, and co-operatively arranged crushing surfaces on said jaws providing laterally directed discharge openings at opposite sides of the crushing chamber intermediate the pivot and drive connections of the movable jaw, said crushing surfaces on said jaws being constructed to provide at the drive end portion of the crushing chamber discharge openings of substantial size between the jaws both laterally and endwise of the chamber and diverging surface portions in the pivot end portion thereof to provide an enlarged inlet opening endwise to the chamber. A normally fixed crushing member 35, 37 is carried by a subframe 5 adapted, in certain circumstances, to pivot about a shaft 7 of a main frame 2, 4. A movable crushing jaw 36, 38 is mounted on a frame 16 pivoted on a shaft 18 of the main frame 2. Lugs 19 extending from the discharge end of the frame 16 are journalled on a transverse shaft 21 carried by a pitman 23 reciprocated by an eccentric 25 on a driven shaft 26 journalled in the subframe 5. The sub-frame 5 is normally held fixed against the main frame by springs 40 but when an uncrushable passes between the crushing jaws, the jaws open a little causing the sub-frame 5 to pivot about the shaft 7, dashpot mechanism 48 (not shown) delaying its return. The crushing jaws are shaped, Fig. 10, with primary crushing parts 35, 36 converging from the inlet to the discharge ends and secondary side crushing parts 37, 38 inclined thereto and diverging from the inlet to the discharge ends, the arrangement being such that material is discharged laterally of the crushing chamber as well as longitudinally from its discharge end. Shims 19a between the lugs 19 of the movable jaw frame 16 and the shaft 21 adjust the distance between the jaws. In a simplified form of crusher, Fig. 13, (not shown), the upper jaw is capable of no pivotal movement, being fixed to the main frame.
