lle. it known that I, IVILIAA ll. HART- MAN, acitizen ot' the United States, residing in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania, have invent-- ed Hammer Crushers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of devices employing rapidly rotating hammers within a suitable cage orscreen casing for the purpose of crushing or breaking coal, ore. etc. and one object of said invention is to provide a machine of this class with a simple. substantial and eflicient device for catching and removing from the cage pieces ot heavy, unbreakable material such as tramp iron or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hammer crusher with a novel form of cage which shall include a movable section or valve. adjustable at will to provide an o-pening for the escape ot tramp iron. etc., and at the same time serve as a deflector for directing such material through the outlet into a pocket or receptacle: the invention including also novel means whereby the position of this adjustable section may be convenient-1 v altered at will during the operation of the machine.

In the above drawings 1--1 represent portions of a frame or casing open at the bottom and having usually at one side of its top, a longitudinally extending inlet- 2 for material to be crushed. Within this structure and extending longitudinally thereof, is a` horizontal shaft 3 mounted in suitable bearings (not shown) and driven by any of the means Well known in this art. This shaft has keyed or otherwise fixed to it a series of parallel spaced plates 4 between which are a series of hammers 5 shown as flat bars pivotally connected to said plates by rods or bolts 6 extending parallel with the shaft 3.
Suitably mounted Within the casing and constituting-the xed bottom of the cage` is an upwardly concave grating 7 Whose inner surface is substantially concentric with t-he shaft 3 and practically continuous With a breaker plate 8 whose flat inner face is substantially tangent to one end of said rating and extends to a throat plate 9. llns lat-ter in turn extends from the upper edge of said breaker plate to the top edge of the inlet opening 2.
From the opposite edge of said inlet opening to a line substantially within the horizontal plane passing centrally through the shaft 3, the trame. constitutes a portion of the cage. although obviously the angular extent of this element may be widely varied without departing from my invention, and this structure, like. the grating or screen structure 7. has its inner surface substantially concentric with the shaft 3. The lower edge of the portion 10 ot the casing is provided with a transversely extending, relatively heavy bar 11, having a sharp outwardly bevelled lower edge, spaced away from a lip piece 13 on the adjacent edge of the grating 7 to define an elongated rectangular opening extending for the full width of the casing.
Between the outer wall 12 of the frame structure and this opening as defined by the cross bar 11 and the lip piece 13, I mount a valve 14 in the form of a structure rotatable on a horizontal axis and having support-- ing spindles 15 operative in bearings formed in the ends of said frame. One of these spindles has fixed to it a gear wheel 16 meshing with a pinion 17 which is fixed to a short shaft 1S carrying also a hand-Wheel 19 whereby the position of the valve structure 14 may be adjusted at will.
This falve struct-ure includes an elongated, cylindrically curved face portion of such angular width and so mounted that when in one of its extreme positions it is capable of approximately fitting into and closing the opening between the cross bar 11 and the lip piece 1?). Said face portion of the valve has connected to or, as in the present case, integral with its inner face an inwardly extending concave hody portion-20 formed to 'coact with the relatively sharp lower transverse edge of said face portion in detlecting material into the chamber or pocket 21 between the cage and the frame when said valve is in its open position.
Under operating conditions. when it is desired or necessary to operate on material which is not easily broken or crushed and which is relatively free from tramp iron,

etc., the valve 14 may be so adjusted by manipulation of the hand Wheel 19 as to cause its face portion to lie across and close the outlet opening between the bar 11 and the lip piece 13. The material delivered to the cage is then acted on by the hammers and the parts of the cage until it is sufficiently broken or crushed to pass out of the openings in the grating or screen. When said material is of such a nature as to be quickly and easily reduced to the fineness necessary to permit it to pass through the grating, or ifthe operator should note the presence of tramp iron, the hand. wheel 19 may be operated to move the face portion of the valve into the open position shown.y
As a result, any iron or steel pieces or other hard unbreakable objects entering the cage are moved by the hammers 5 at a high velocity, and when brought opposite the out-- let opening, pass through the same tangentially to their former path, striking the defiecting body 20 of the valve and being d1- rected thereby downwardly into the pocket 21 and if desired out of the casing. Any hard or uncrushed but breakable pieces of coal or other material under treatment are thus delivered by the hammers against the edge or body of the valve 14 and are broken or crushed, where it might be otherwise necessary for them to be carried around by the hammers through anotherrevolution of the shaft 3. From the above description it will be appreciated that by means of my particular device the machine may be adjusted to suit it for the treatment of different grades or classes of material and especially such as contains objectionable foreign substances the arrangement of parts being such that the valve structure is not subjected to abnormal wear nor the probability of injury, while its adjustment may be accomplished with the utmost ease .during operation of the machine.
Obviously when the material operated on is of such a nature as to require more or less prolonged action of the hammers, the valve 14 may be adjusted to its closed position so that said material will be' carried around and sooner or later reduced to such lineness as to pass out of the cage.
I claim:
1. The combination in a hammer crusher of a cage having inlet and outlet openings; a series of rotary hammers in the cage; and a rotatably adjustable valve mounted adjacent the outlet opening, said valve including a circumferential'face adjustable into position to form a portion of the cage Wall when the out-let opening is closed, and also including a portion extending from said face in.:Y
wardly toward the axis of rotation of the valve to constitute a detlecting plate when the outlet opening is open.
2. The combination in a hammer crusher of a cage having inlet and outlet openings; series of rotary hammers in the cage; and a rotary structure including a cylindrically curved plate adjustable at will to close said outlet opening and having a portion extending from one edge toward its axis of revolution to direct downwardly material passing through the outlet when it is open.
3. The combination in a hammer crusher or' a cage having inlet and outlet openings; a series of rotary hammers in said cage; With a rotary valve having a face portion adjustable at will to close said outlet opening and including a body portion positioned to serve as a delector' for material passing from the cage when said face portion of the valve is in its open position.
4. The combination in a hammer crusher of a structure including a cage and a pocket, said cage having an inlet for material to be crushed and being formed with an outlet into said pocket; with a valve including a' face portion anda body portion; and means Jfor adjusting the valve to control the passage ot' material into the pocket.k
5. The combination in a hammer crusher of a substantially cylindrical cage having an inlet opening and provided with an outi let opening; a valve rotatably mounted adjacent said outlet opening and including two angularly disposed parts; with means for adjusting said Valve at will to bring one of its parts into position to close the outlet opening or to cause its other part to deiiect the material after it has passed through the opening.
6. The combination in a hammer crusher of a structure including a casing having an inletopening and provided with a bottom grating and a transversely extending outlet opening adjacent thereto; a rotatably mounted structure adjacent said opening having a portion formed to close the same and including also a body positioned to serve as a delector when said structure is in its open position; with means for adjusting WILLIAM H.
