Abstract

643,430. Watermarking and printing in paper-making machines. MACLAURIN, J. D. Aug. 30, 1948, No. 22817. Convention date, Sept. 6, 1947. [Class 96] The travelling pulp web 2 on the wire-cloth 1 of a paper-making machine is watermarked by pressure of air, from slots 10 in pipes 9, exerted through stencil openings 7 in an endless belt 5 which is driven at the same speed as the wire-cloth 1 and which passes beneath a cover 8 having an air outlet 11. In a modification, air and a pigment or filler suspension in water is supplied from a pipe at each end of the cover 8 for producing a white or coloured watermark, additional guide rolls being used to lower and raise the travelling belt 5 gradually to, and from the web 2. In a further modification for colour printing, three supply pipes 9 are each double-walled, the outer walls being rotated so that a supply of colour synchronizes with the coincidence of a part of the stencil of the belt 5 with a restricted opening beneath each pipe, the openings being complementary so that different sections of the stencil receive different colours; air under pressure is supplied through the fourth pipe to press all the pigments into the web. The cover 8 &c. is reciprocated horizontally to sharpen the definition of the colour printing.
