Abstract

[Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] In strip winding apparatus, the material is supported in a loop between two rollers and forms, with a fixed electrode, a capacitance which comprises one arm of an A.C. bridge; change in strip tension alters the position of the loop and consequently the balance of the bridge, the output of which is used to correctively control the speed of the winding motor. As shown, the strip 5 of conductive material is wound on roller 2 by motor.4 supplied from generator 8. A capacitance, formed between the plate 11 and material 5 or between two plates capacitatively coupled to the loop (not shown), is inserted in the A.C. bridge 12, the output of which is amplified by valve 17 and applied to the grids 27, 28 of the valves 29, 30. The anodes of the latter are supplied with A.C. in phase opposition by transformer 45 and valves 29, 30 thereby constitute a phase-sensitive amplifier. The D.C. potentials developed across resistors 41, 42 are dependent upon the phase and amplitude of the bridge output and are applied to the grids 47, 50 of the triodes which energize the armatures of motors 56, 55 which are mechanically coupled together and have opposed drives. The tapping of the field-adjusting potentiometer 62 of generator 8 is carried on the common shaft of motors 55, 56 and is positioned in accordance with the output of bridge 12 so as to adjust the speed of winder 6 and consequently regulate the strip tension. Where strip 5 is a non-conductor the loop may support a member which forms a capacitor with a fixed electrode.
