[Also in Groups XXXVI and XXXIX] In an arrangement for automatically controlling the pitch attitude of an aircraft, a gyroscopic vertical 5 actuates the rotor 7 of an adjustable transformer 8 and a proportional displacement signal is applied directly to a winding 17 of a magnetic amplifier 13 and over a magnetic rate-taking device 10 (see Group XXXIX) to a winding 12. The amplifier includes a negative feedback winding 31 and its output energizes the differential field windings 14, 15 of a generator 16 in a Ward-Leonard system comprising driving and controlled motors 19, 23. Motor 23 controls the position of an aircraft elevator 26, and also determines the position of a wiper 28 on a D.C. resistance bridge which provides the negative feedback signal to winding 31 of the amplifier.
