Abstract

642,428. Vehicle fittings for loading and unloading; load-handling machines. LAYTON, D. A. Oct. 20, 1947, No. 28017. [Classes 78 (iii) and 78 (iv)] The body of a vehicle is supported from the chassis by means of a pair of guide members mounted at each end of a transverse shaft which is attached to one girder of each pair and engages a slot in the other, the girder members of each pair being arranged for relative pivotal motion providing a scissor-like action by which the body is raised until, at a predetermined point, the shaft slides in the slots so that continued motion of the girder members attached to the shaft causes the body to tip. As shown, the body 5 of a vehicle is supported from the chassis 1 by members 6 pivoted at 11 to longitudinals 5a of the body and sliding on rods 12 secured in blocks 13 on the chassis, and by members 6a pivoted to blocks 9 on the chassis and sliding between pairs of stops 10 on rods 10a secured to the body. The members 6, 6a are pivoted together by a shaft 7 secured to the members 6a and engaging at its ends 7a in slots 8 in the members 6. The slots 8 extend parallel to the edges of the girders 6 for most of their length but are inclined to those edges at their ends. As the shaft 7 is raised by a hydraulic ram 17, the body is raised until, when the girders 6, 6a reach a predetermined inclination, the ends 7a of the shaft 7 move along the slot 8 to tip the body as indicated in broken lines. The ram 17 is preferably of the type including two pistons, one sliding within the other and being brought into operation at the end of the raising motion when it is desired to tip the body. The girders 6 may be placed inside the girders 6a and the body may tip in the opposite sense from that shown.
