Abstract
641,866. Concrete ships. ANDREW, E. W. July 14, 1948, No. 18942. Convention date, Sept. 8, 1947. [Class 113 (ii)] In a pontoon structure the exterior of the bottom comprises a plurality of tubes 7 formed of high density concrete pipes disposed in continguous parallel relationship, and each sealed to exclude water. Each tube is made up of a plurality of spun pipes sealed at their joints and tensioned into position by tie-rods 11. In one embodiment a sealing composition 22 is poured into the upper concavity between adjacent tubes and the pontoon is completed by pouring concrete over the nest of tubes 7 to form the bottom 23 and moulding the super structure 24 with transverse and longitudinal beams 25, 26 and reinforcement rods 27. In another embodiment the superstructure comprises a framing which rests upon the tubes and includes members engaging the upper concavities between the tubes to form a cradle for the tubes. The tubes 7 may be disposed transversely or longitudinally and may be of other than circular cross-section.
