Abstract
149,137. Maunsell, G. A. Aug. 28, 1919. Piers &c.-Wharves, jetties, piers, &c., supported on piles, cylinders, or like foundations are constructed by floating into position one or more reinforcedconcrete pontoons so that they rest upon the foundation to which they are rigidly connected. These pontoons while afloat are used as working platforms in making the foundations. Fig. 1 shows a form in which the reinforced-concrete pontoon a has openings b left in it for the purpose of constructing the columns c<1>, c<2>. The columns are constructed with vertical tongues t so arranged that at high tide the pontoons may be floated into such a position that the tongues engage slots h, Fig. 2, therein and that the pontoons rest on top of the columns the space between the tongue and slot being filled with concrete. Reinforcing-rods may pass through holes in the pontoon into holes in the cylinder and the space then filled in with cement grout. When the pontoons are formed in sections a<1>, a<2>, Fig. 6, they may be joined by means of bolts y, passing through grooves left for the purpose, the grooves being filled with concrete. The cells of the pontoon may be utilized to accommodate tanks, railways, machinery, pipes, cables, &c. and may support superstructures such as sheds, cranes, &c.
