Abstract

426,773. Casting floating concrete structures. VARNI, A., Pallanza, Italy. Oct. 18, 1934, No. 29856. [Class 113 (ii)] [See also Group XXI] Floating structures of elongated form are cast on the surface of the water by the use of moulds by means of which such a structure may be lengthened progressively. Fig. 1 shows in cross section a concrete pontoon-like structure consisting of side compartments 1, 2, a flooded chamber 7, and a space 6. It is reinforced by ribs 9, 10, by transverse walls, and by struts 18, and has manholes 17 and other accessories. This is cast in a four-part mould one part of which, shown in Fig. 4, consists of a platform 12<11> supported by two floats 14, with side walls 12<1> which form the sides of the mould, the parts 12<11>, 12<1> being connected by hinges 12<111>. A structure such as is shown in Fig. 1 is cast in four such moulds joined end to end, the ends of the four associated moulds being closed by caisson-like doors and supplementary partitions. When the concrete has set, the two centre moulds are removed by flooding in each of them one of the tanks 14, which sinks until the platform 12<11> is substantially vertical. The two centre moulds are then floated to the outer ends of the other two moulds, which are still in place, and are joined to them, leaving the central part of the cast structure water supported. Additional lengths of the structure are then cast, one at each end, the other two moulds moved out to the outer ends of the newly-cast length, and the process repeated until a floating structure of the desired length is obtained.
