[Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group VI] Crumpets &c. are made by dropping dough from a hopper 10 into each mould 16, 19 of an endless chain which passes over cooking burners 29, between the upper and lower runs of the chain, the cooked crumpets then being ejected on the bottom conveyer run, and dropped on another endless conveyer 36 which carries them away. The dough is delivered from the hopper 10 by a rotary distributer 13, Fig. 9, which drops measured pieces into each of the moulds which may be arranged three abreast. The mould has a sliding-up-and-down bottom 19, the sliding being limited by shoulders in the mould sides 16. Just before it arrives at the dough-receiving position each bottom 19 falls down by gravity or is pushed down by a pin 31 on a pivoted arm 30, the outer end of which has been lifted up by the conveyer rollers 22 and then allowed to drop so that each of the pins 31 strikes and pushes down the bottom 19 of each mould to make a pocket for the dough. After cocking, the bottom 19 of the mould now on the bottom run of the conveyer, is struck on its other side in the same way by pins 31 of a similar lower pivoted arm 30, or falls by gravity whereby the base 19 now projects out of the sides of the mould 16 so that the adhering crumpet can be scraped off the face 7 by a fixed knife 35. The mould bottom 19 is prevented from falling out by flanges 20. The bottom run of the conveyer moulds is prevented from sagging by support rails.
