Abstract

Apparatus used in contact with molten glass and made from a foundation or core of base metal or base metal alloy having a solidus temperature at least as high as 1200 DEG C and a covering or sheath of a platinum group metal or alloy of two or more such metals has an intermediate layer of inert material, such as an oxide which serves to prevent diffusion of oxygen to the foundation or core and to prevent interalloying of the foundation or core with the covering or sheath. The foundation or core may be of molybdenum or tungsten or an alloy of these metals and the covering or sheath may be platinum or an alloy of platinum with a smaller quantity of rhodium or palladium or both. The oxide layer may be moulded onto the foundation or core with the aid of a binder which is subsequently removed by ignition, or it may be formed by applying a layer of metal e.g. chromium or aluminium by evaporation or spraying, this layer being then oxidised. If the base is of nickel-chromium alloy a surface of oxide may be formed directly by high temperature oxidation.
