Abstract

Ceramic and vitreous objects, for example of porcelain and glass are ornamented by burning in gold powder in the presence of small quantities (e.g. 0,5-1 per cent) of rhodium, chromium or uranium, which are said to retard or prevent volatilization of the gold during firing. Silver, copper, or bismuth may be mixed with the gold to produce colouring effects. The rhodium &c. may be mixed with the gold powder by alloying and pulverizing, by cathode p precipitation in the same electrolytic bath followed by rolling and pulverizing, or by direct admixture of the powdered metals. The article to be treated is coated with a layer of lacquer, varnish, resin, oil, &c., and when this is tacky the mixed powder is dusted on. Alternatively the rhodium &c. powder may be added separately to the lacquer &c. and the gold powder dusted on afterwards. In this last method the rhodium &c. may be in the form of a compound which yields the metal on heating. The addition of rhodium &c. is said also to prevent the gold from running into globules during firing.
