Abstract
A crucible or other apparatus in contact with molten glass comprises a core of a base metal or base metal alloy, a covering of a metal of the platinum group or an alloy of two or more such metals, and in intermediate layer, thinner than the covering, of gold or a gold-rich alloy. The core may be of molybdenum, tungsten or an alloy of those two metals, as described in Specification 615,813, or of a nickel-chromium or nickel-chromium-iron alloy. The gold &c. layer (e.g. 0.001 or 0.005 in. thick) may be bonded to the core or covering or both.
