Abstract
The sulphur content of a light petroleum fraction is reduced by contacting with an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide containing one or more poly-hydroxy benzene carboxylic acids, tannins or tannic acid. Acids mentioned are dihydroxybenzoic acids such as protocatechuic acid and the resorcylic acids, and trihydroxybenzoic acids such as gallic acid. Sodium hydroxide solution is the preferred alkali and the catalytic reagent may be used with or without a solutizer, such as orthocresol. The alkaline solution of the reagent may be regenerated by blowing with a gas containing free oxygen until only a small amount, for example 0.2-0.3 per cent, of unoxidized mercaptides remains; the regenerated solution is separated from oily material and used again. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the use of polyhydroxybenzenes. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
