Abstract

640,771. Change - speed control. GUY MOTORS, Ltd., and ROBERTS, G. P. Aug. 16, 1948, No. 21554. [Class 80(ii)] To effect operative rotation of the control levers 29 of a cam-shaft actuated epicyclic gear from a gear lever 12 moving in a normal H gate, the lever 12 moves sideways in the gate to pick up one or other of quadrants 20-22 meshing, with mutually different gearing ratios, quadrants 24-26 on the spindle 27 of the lever 29. Equal movements of the lever 12 in a direction at right angles then rocks the lever 29 by different angular amounts according to the quadrants engaged. As shown, the lever is movable on either side of a central neutral position to engage (a) first and second speeds through quadrants 21, 25, (b) third and fourth speeds through quadrants 20, 24 and (c), pressing back a resiliently-: mounted reverse stop 33, reverse gear through quadrants 22, 26. The respective positions of the lever 29 for these speeds are shown by the legends 1-4 and R; Fig. 5. If desired, movement of the shaft 27 through the quadrants 22, 26 can also effect engagement of a fifth speed. A spring mounted ball 30 resiliently locates the lever 12 in its neutral and operative positions. According to the Provisional Specification, the quadrants 20, 24 and 21, 25 operates first second and third/fourth speed changes respectively, and the stop 33 may be replaced by a positive reverse stop.
