Abstract

640,681. Making welding - electrodes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 18, 1947, No. 33457. Convention date, Dec. 20, 1946. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Powder metallurgy.-A resistance welding electrode is made of a mixture of copper and carbon powders in which the carbon comprises 0.25-0.75 per cent of this mixture by weight. Powdered graphite and copper are mixed in a ball-mill for 6 hours and are then pressed in a steel mould at 59,000 lbs. per square inch and heated in a hydrogen atmosphere at 950‹ C. Alternatively, the copper may be heated for 2-3 hours at 500‹ C. in an hydrogen atmosphere and then mixed with graphite in a ballmill for 10 hours and pressed in a mould at 2500 lbs. per square inch at 1000‹ C. Specification 424,816 is referred to.
