Abstract
An inhomogeneous powder, for use in making sintered steel having low dimensional changes during sintering and hardening, comprises:- Ni 0À2-0À8% Mn 0À5-2% and Mo 0-0À6% the balance being iron with a maximum oxygen content of 0À3% and has a compressibility of at least 6À30 g/cm3 at a compacting pressure of 4À2 2 Mp/ cm2 . The powder may be prepared by (1) mixing Fe, Ni and Mo powders together (the Ni and Mo powders being smaller than the Fe powder) and heating the mixture at 730-1030 C. in a reducing atmosphere for at least 15 minutes (2) mixing the powders as above with an organic binder solution and distilling off the solvent or (3) heating at 730- 1030 C. a mixture of Fe powder with Ni and Mo oxides or aqueous solution of Ni and Mo compounds. The prealloyed powder is then mixed with Mn (e.g. in the form of Fe Mn or electrolytic Mn), graphite to provide the C in the steel and a die lubricant (e.g. zinc stearate), the mixture being pressed and sintered. The sintered compact may be austeritized at 850 C. and quenched in oil to 50 C.
