Abstract
1295508 Lubricants BOEING CO 17 Dec 1970 60077/70 Heading C5F [Also in Division C7] Sintered solid lubricants are prepared by heating to at least 2400‹ F. a mixture of a chaicogenide powder from the group. Vb, VIb and rare earth chalcogenides (or a mixture thereof) and a carbide-forming refractory metal powder; compacting the mixture at a pressure of at least 2500 p.s.i. while maintaining the temperature and reacting the refractory metal powder with carbon while maintaining the temperature and pressure. The carbon can be obtained by using graphite pressing dies or by including an oil or a carbon-containing gas in the lubricant mixture. The metal powder (e.g. Mo, Nb, Ta, W) and chalcogenide (e.g. WS 2 , MoS 2 ) are preferably blended together and compressed to a slug. The slug is broken up, screened, heated and compressed so as to react with carbon. B, Fe, Ni, Cr and Co may be included in the mixture.
