Abstract

A method of producing a high carbon, hard and abrasion resistant alloy, the composition of which includes at least 1% of at least one of the elements of the group consisting of chromium, vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten, which comprises operations of: atomizing a melt having an initial composition that includes at least 1% of one of the elements of this group consisting of chromium, vanadium, molybdenum and tungsten, and less than 0.2% carbon, to form a cold densifiable powder, mixing said powder with carbon particles to form a mixture having at least about 0.6% carbon to achieve the desired final composition, compressing said mixture to give a densified blank, and heating said powder densiflcable at a temperature and for a time sufficient to cause carbon diffusion and synthesis.
