Abstract
A method of melting aluminium and aluminium alloys in a rotary furnace under a salt bath comprises the steps of introducing into the furnace a batch of salt having a melting point equal to or nearly equal to that of the charge to be melted, heating the salt to its melting temperature as the furnace is rotated at a speed intermediate between its minimum rotational speed and the highest rotational speed at which no centrifuging takes place, heating the melted salt to a temperature higher than its melting point while rotating at the said highest rotational speed, cutting off heating while maintaining high rotational speed and charging the metal to be melted until the salt cools and solidifies forming a conglomerate with the metal to be melted, heating the conglomerate while rotating the furnace at its minimum rotational speed till liquefaction commences, rotating the furnace at the said intermediate speed between the start and end of liquefaction and then at the said highest speed until the casting temperature of the metal is attained. As a modification of the method, during the stage of charging the metal, the furnace may be alternatively rotated at a low speed through a small angle and held stationary. The treatment of aluminium-copper alloys is referred to.
