Urethanes of the general formula RNHCOOR1, where R is the radical C15H16N2 derived from lysergic or isolysergic acid C15H16N2COOH by removal of the carboxyl groups and R1 denotes alkyl, are prepared by converting lysergic or isolysergic acid azides into the corresponding isocyanates by methods known for the conversion of acid azides into isocyanates such as by warming in a solvent, e.g. benzene, and treating the isocyanate with an alcohol. The reaction may be carried out in one step by adding the azide of lysergic or isolysergic acid to the boiling alcohol. In examples, there are prepared by the processes of the invention the methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl esters of (6-methyl - ergolenyl - 8)- and (6 - methyl - isoergolenyl-8)-carbamic acid. Lysergic acid azide and isolysergic acid azide are prepared by treating the corresponding hydrazides with sodium nitrite and dilute hydrochloric acid.
