Abstract

Hydrogen is produced by bringing steam into contact with material containing ferrous oxide at a temperature not more than 120 DEG C. higher than the temperature below which ferrous oxide is unstable, i.e. 565-580 DEG C.; the ferrosoferric oxide produced is subsequently reduced by contacting it with a reducing gas at a temperature not less than 220 DEG C. higher than the temperature below which ferrous oxide is unstable. The ferruginous material may be in a stationary bed which is successively subjected to steam and reducing gas, or in a fluidized bed when the steaming and reducing steps may be carried out in the same or separate vessels with, in the latter case, continuous circulation of ferruginous material between the vessels. Particulate ferrosoferric oxide is fed to a fluidized bed maintained at 900-1000 DEG C. in the reducing vessel, by the passage of preheated producer gas therethrough. Ferrous oxide-containing material is withdrawn from the bottom of the reducing vessel, cooled to 580 DEG C., and fed to a fluidized bed maintained at 600-700 DEG C. in a second vessel, by passage of steam therethrough. The ferrosoferric oxide material is withdrawn from the bottom of the second vessel and heated to 1200 DEG C. before return to the reducing vessel. Specifications 288,154, (Class 90), and 586,914 are referred to.
