Abstract

639,478. Mixing appliances. GROSSMAN, A. Aug. 15, 1947, No. 22794. [Class 86] Two co-axially mounted mixing propellers, the shaft of one rotating inside the other, are geared together so that they rotate at different speeds, the lower and inner one being connected directly to the driving shaft of the prime mover and rotating quickly to move precipitates &c. near the bottom of the tank, and the upper and outer one rotating more slowly, and being geared to the inner by an internally toothed ring. The prime mover is attached to a frame 10 and a flexible coupling 12 connects its shaft with the shaft 13 of the propellers. This shaft 13 is connected directly through a thrust bearing 38 to the shaft 20 of the inner co-axial propeller. Mounted on the frame 10 is a cylindrical body member 23 in which a cylindrical internally toothed member 17 is free to rotate. The shaft 36 of the outer propeller is keyed directly to this member. A pinion 28 mounted on the shaft 13 engages toothed wheels 29, 30 which engage the internal toothing of the cylinder 17 to rotate it at a slower speed than the shaft 20. The propellers are shaped so that the lower one directs materials upwardly into the path of the upper one which directs them downwardly. The thrusts therefore on the propellers are downwards for the lower one, a thrust which is taken up by the bearing 38. and upwards for the upper propeller, this thrust being taken by a ball bearing 39. The body member 23 is made substantially oil-tight by means of seals 46, 47, 48, 49 and oil is admitted to the gearing through a pipe 44 from which it can reach all the rotating parts.
