Abstract

Pigment-free white opaque films are formed from a solution of polymerized omega amino caproic acid in aqueous alcohol containing 5-40 per cent water, and dried at 25-70 DEG C., the drying temperature being relatively low when the water content of the solvent is low and higher when the solvent contains more water. In example 1 a solution of 15 parts of polymerized omega amino caproic acid in a solvent consisting of 77.5 parts of ethyl alcohol and 7.5 parts of water was cast to a film and dried at 25 DEG C. for 24 hours and then at 70 DEG C. for 2 hours. The film was white and opaque due to the presence of acids. In example 2 the solvent consisted of 55 parts of ethyl alcohol and 30 parts of water and the drying temperature was 70 DEG C. Optimum conditions are described showing the minimum amount of water required to produce opacity under given drying conditions. Some figures are given for optimum solvent compositions at given drying temperatures. The opaque films may be used for coating paper, plywood, wood or plastic-cellulose laminates or as packaging material. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 includes the use of synthetic linear polyamides generally and mentions various other solvent-non-solvent combinations which may be employed in the process. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
