Abstract

Paper and cardboard are rendered resistant to moisture, acids and alkalies by coating with a solution made by mixing solutions containing respectively unvulcanized rubber and a plasticizer, and a cellulose derivative and a plasticizer in a solvent mixture containing a solvent for unvulcanized rubber, in such proportions that the solution contains six or less parts of rubber to 94 to 100 parts of cellulose derivative. A suitable rubber solution contains cr<\>zepe rubber, methylene chloride or trichlorethylene, and liquid paraffin. The cellulose derivative solution may comprise collodion cotton, acetone, methylene chloride or trichlorethylene, and diethyl phthalate. Fillers such as gum dammer and titanium oxide, colouring matter and powdered aluminium or bronze may be added. The solution may be applied by spreading, brushing, spraying, by means of rollers or by immersion and the solvent evaporated in a heated chamber. A continuous process is preferably used.
