Abstract
639,289. Filters. WIPAC DEVELOPMENT, Ltd., and BALLEY, R. A. Jan. 29, 1948, Nos. 2739 and 24743. [Class 46] A filter of the kind in which the media are enclosed in a canister which is discarded when they are exhausted, includes a support part and a canister part, a screw-threaded spigot rigid with one of the parts and engaged in an internally screw-threaded socket in the other of the parts, an annular chamber surrounding the spigot between two facings on the two parts respectively, annular sealing means clamped between the facings by the screwing of the 'spigot into the socket and closing the periphery of the chamber, a flow (or return) duct in one part leading longitudinally through the spigot and communicating directly with a duct in the other part and opening into the socket, and return (or flow) ducts in each of the parts opening directly into the annular chamber. As shown in Fig. 3 a support 10 has a tubular boss 13 having a bore 54 the upper end of which is counterbored to a larger diameter at 14 and carries a resilient washer 22, and the lower end of which communicates with an oil inlet 16. An internally-screwed socket is provided in a hollow boss 17 co-axially disposed in the bore and communicates with an oil outlet 19 through a radial web 21. A canister shell 24, Fig. 4, contains filter media arranged between perforated diaphragms 34, 35 and surrounding an outlet tube 32 connected to the head of an externally-screwed spigot 27, which is secured to the canister base by a stepped nut 28 the riser 30 of which may be of frusto-conical form as shown. An oil inlet 36 penetrates the nut 28, the canister base and a washer 26. When the spigot 27 is screwed into the socket 17, the dimensions of the washer 22 and the depths of the counterbore 14 and the step 30 are such that an annular chamber 1/16 deep surrounding the spigot 27 is formed between the facings 29 and 55. The washer 22 is axially and radially compressed. A multiple support having a single inlet and outlet for parallel flow may be provided in place of that shown, and may include plugs for obturating seatings not occupied by canisters. According to the first Provisional Specification, the socket, unthreaded, may pass through the part in which it Is provided and accommodate a tubular capped nut having a radial duct and an annular facing reacting through sealing means on the last-mentioned part on the side of the radial duct farther from the spigot, so that the two parts can be connected together by a relative rotation of the nut and the part having the spigot. The first Provisional Specification also describes an embodiment similar to that shown, but in which the sealing washer is cemented to 'the nut forming the canister facing, inside an annular flange provided on the nut, and on engagement of the parts the washer is compressed between that flange and the outer face of an annular flange of frusto-conical form on the support part.
