Abstract
615,250. Filters. HOUDAILLE-HERSHEY CORPORATION. April 10, 1946, No. 10980. Convention date, April 12, 1945. [Class 46] An oil filter comprises a casing 4, Fig. 1, having an outlet opening 3 and inlet opening 2 in the lower part thereof, an outlet tube 15 extending upwardly from the outlet opening, the outlet tube being closed by a plug 20 at the top, and having side openings 18 in the upper portion, and a filtering element 40 surrounding the outlet tube, characterised by the features that a core tube 23 is telescoped over but spaced from the outlet tube 15 and has openings 25 in its wall, a seal 28 is provided between the lower ends of the tubes 15, 23, both of said series of openings 18, 25 are covered by screens 19, 26, and the filtering element 40 is disposed around the core tube 23 outside the screen 26 over the core tube openings 25. As shown, the perforated portions of the outlet tube 15 and core tube 23 are each reduced in diameter, the screens 19, 26 being of such thicknesses that their outer surfaces are substantially flush with the unreduced portions. Each of the gauges 19, 26, consists of a relatively large-meshed inner layer and an outer layer of such fineness as to be substantially impervious to light. The core tube 23 is pressed against a gasket 16 by a spring 35 acting between a plug 33 and a knob 34 on a rod 32 which has a bayonet connection with the plug 20. The filter cartridge 40 comprises a canvas bag 37 containing, e.g., triturated fuller's earth, infusorial or diatomaceous earth and stitched to a felt tube 38. The cartridge is secured between a fixed flange 42 and a loose flange 43 by a wing-nut 44, and may be removed separately, or as a unit with the core tube 23, when more than one cartridge is used, the protruding portions of tube 38 between adjacent ones are turned outwardly and pressed together. When fitting a new cartridge, the old one is removed without the core tube. The rod 32 is then released and the core tube 23 removed and inserted in the new cartridge, forcing out a temporary cardboard core in this operation. The complete unit is then replaced over the outlet tube 15. Fig. 9 shows a modified filter cartridge structure and method of mounting. The core tube 23 screws onto the outside, and the outlet tube 15 to the inside, of a bushing 50, and one or more filter cartridges each consisting of a pair of concentric perforated cylinders 59, 60 packed with any suitable form of filter medium, are secured between the fixed flange 42 and the sliding flange 43 by a spring 58 interposed between a knob 55 and the flange 43. A bayonet connection 54, 57 is again provided. Gaskets 66 provide fluid-tight joints between adjacent cartridges and gasket 67 with the core tube. The cartridges shown in Fig. 9 may be used with the general filter construction shown in Fig. 1, and vice-versa, with slight modifications in construction. In a further modification, the flanges 42, 43, Fig. 1, are'dispensed with, and the ends of the felt tube 38 are not bent outwards but clamped to the core tube 23 by split rings tightened by nuts and bolts.
