[Class 59] A sugar cane mill has an upright head and bearings: for the upper cylinder adapted to move vertically and subjected to a downward hydraulic pressure, the lower cylinders on each side of the vertical plane through the axis of the upper cylinder being so positioned in level with respect to each other, and with the entry cylinder above the outlet cylinder, that the resultant force from the reactions of the lower cylinders is substantially opposite the resultant force of the hydraulic pressure. An upper roller 6 is journalled in bearings 11 adapted, to. move vertically in upright heads. 7 with, or against, hydraulic pistons. 9 which engage the bearings through knee joints 10 which permit slight lateral movement of the roller 6, which in its normal position is centred by the seating of rounded lower surfaces of the bearings 11 in sockets 16 formed in the heads 7. Lower rollers 4, 5 co-operating with the upper roller 6 are adjustable theretoward by wedges 29, 28. and have-extending between them an inclined and adjustable scraper or trash-turner 30. The driven shaft of the roller 6 drives the roller 4 through pinions at one end of the mill and the roller 5 through pinions at the other end of the mill, or through two sets of pinions lying in different planes.
