Abstract
638,614. Magnetic couplings. REDLER CONVEYORS, Ltd., and ALLIN, C. W. April 9, 1948, No. 9996. [Class 35] [Also in Group XXXVII] Rotation of a shaft 22 carrying a permanent magnet 26 causes the rotation through a limited angle of a contact-operating conducting drum 29 owing to magnetic drag. The magnet 26 may comprise four radial poles the flux from which passes through the drum 29 to a fixed iron cylinder 35. The drum is biassed by gravity or a spring to one position, and moves to the other position when the speed of the magnet is great enough. In so moving, a pin 38 on the drum either directly engages a tilting mercury switch to cause it to open or as shown, Fig. 4, engages a latch 51 which moves relatively to the mercury switch without operating it during movement of the pin 38 to the right. Tilting of the mercury switch is in this case effected momentarily when the speed lessens and the pin 38 moves back to the left. An electric impulse may thus be given when the speed exceeds or falls below a certain value.
