Abstract
An antifoaming agent comprises a mixture of tannin, a long chain ether of ethylene glycol or polyethylene glycol and, if desired, sodium carbonate and/or glassy sodium phosphate. The most effective ethers are those derived from polyethylene glycol and a hydroxy fatty acid ester having 7 to 24 carbon atoms in its molecule. Preferred mixtures contain 30 to 60 parts of tannin, 3 to 8 parts of the ether, 30 to 60 parts of sodium carbonate and 5 to 20 parts of the phosphate. To prevent foaming the mixture is added to boiling water in an amount containing 0.1 to 1 part of the ether per million parts of water. In an example, ethylene oxide is added to ricinoleic acid containing caustic soda to give an ester-ether which is added to anhydrous sodium carbonate. A mixture of tannins and phosphate is then added thereto. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 648,099.ALSO:An ether-ester of ricinoleic acid is prepared, according to an example, by heating 3.4 parts ricinoleic acid at 130-140 DEG C. with agitation in presence of caustic soda in an autoclave and introducing 1.55 parts ethylene oxide. Slightly different proportions are mentioned in the Provisional Specification. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 648,099.
