Abstract
638,258. Tank closures; stoppers. GOODRICH CO., B. F. May 13, 1948, No. 13139. Convention date, Aug. 7, 1947. [Classes 21 and 125(iii)] A removable closure, e.g. for fuel tanks, bottles or jars, comprises an annular resilient body 13 which is closed in the middle by means 26, 30 which compress it axially and thereby expand it laterally to make the seal against the mouth of the vessel, the body being formed with a groove or grooves 22, 23 separating the sealing part 20 of the body from a part or parts, 19, 21 which act to lock the closure against displacement in the mouth of the vessel. The grooves 22, 23 are vented by grooves 24, 25 to avoid suction effects when closure is to be removed. The lower annular faces of the parts 19, 21 and, if desired, the part 20, are outwardly and upwardly inclined so that, when the distortion of the body 13 brings the parts into contact with the mouth of the vessel, any tendency to displace the closure outwardly would be resisted by further distortion of the body 13, the inclined annular faces being brought into perpendicularity with the surface of the mouth. The upper plate 30 rests upon the margin of the mouth opening, and is dished and apertured to receive a cam and cam lever 36, 37, which are pivoted to a central post 28. A washer is interposed between the cam and plate 30. A bar and chain 42, 43 prevent loss of the closure when the latter is removed from the vessel.
