Abstract

638,227. Electrostatic precipitation. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Nov. 14, 1947, No. 30289. Convention date, Nov. 26, 1946. [Class 39 (i)] In an electrostatic precipitator, having separate ionizing and precipitation electrodes, ionizing electrodes 23 of relatively large diameter curved cross-section, extend between spaced vertical walls 13, 14 of a casing 5 and relatively small diameter ionizing wires 20 pass through openings 22 in the walls 13, 14 between the ionizing electrode 23 and are supported at their ends by insulators 18 located outside the walls 13, 14. The insulators 18 are mounted on flanges 17 secured to the outer sides of the walls 13, 14. The ionizing wires 20 are attached directly to one of the supports 19 mounted on an insulator 18, and through springs to the other support 19. The electrodes 23 contact the upper ends of the walls 13, 14 in arcs of similar diameter. The edges of the openings 22 which are semicircular, are rounded so that the strength of the ionizing field is not reduced around the wires 20 where they pass through the openings 22. The insulated plates 31 of the precipitation electrodes 25, 31 are attached to bolts 26 which extend through openings in the walls 13, 14 and are attached to supports 37 mounted on insulators 28, 29. Resilient members 34 which grip a blade 11 forming the connection to a high voltage source, are secured to a plate 30, to which one of the supports 37 for the insulated plates 31 is attached. The gas is drawn into the casing 5 through a grille in a hinged cover 6.
