Abstract

1374445 Electrostatic separation J BLONDEEL and R DE NUTTE 10 Nov 1971 [15 Jan 1971] 52273/71 Heading B2J [Also in Division A5] A method of influencing bioligical phenomena in a space comprises establishing in said space an electric field between upper and lower electrodes 6, 1, such that electrode 6 is positive and electrode 1 is relatively negative earthed, and applying a modulation at 6 to 12 Hz to the electrode 1 with an amplitude such that the field between electrodes 1 and 6 is always in the same direction. The electrode 1 is a metal plate in the floor of an enclosure 2 having side walls 8 which may form part of electrode 1. Electrode 6 is suspended by insulator 7 from a third electrode 3 suspended by insulators 5 from the ceiling 4. Electrodes 3 and 6 are connected to the negative and positive poles respectively of a D.C. source and electrode 1 is connected to said negative pole via a resistor and the secondary of a transformer having a primary connected to an A.C. sinewave sawtoothwave or rectangular-wave source of 6 to 12 Hz, preferably 10.3 Hz. Said resistor is at least 10 and preferably 15, megohns and a resistance of at least 10,000 meghons, e.g. the air resistance, is provided between electrodes 1, 6. The lower surfaces of electrodes 3 and 6 and the upper surface of electrode 1 are planar, and the upper surface of electrode 6 has conical projections 10, e.g. of 5 mm. hight. A convective discharge occurs, without ozone formation, between cones 10 and electrode 3 providing a purifying and sterilising action on the air in area 15 between electrodes 3 and 6, floating solid and smelling particles being thereby removed. The air in enclosure 2 is thereby sterilised due to natural circulation of air through area 15. The ratio of the electric field strength in volts/mtr, in area 15 to the dielectric constant of the air therein is 7,000 to 50,000, and the ratio between the maximum field strength in volts/mtr in the region between electrodes 1 and 6 and the dielectric constant of the air in that region is 1,500 to 3,500, preferably 2,500. Electrodes 1 and 6 are 2 to 3 meters apart and electrodes 3 and 6 are 25 to 35 cms. apart. The concentration of charged particles, of about ten associated atoms carrying unit charge, maintained in the space is 400 to 500 ions/cc with an excess of negative over positive particles.
