Abstract
<PICT:0637756/III/1> Lime is hydrated by passing it with water through a conveyer A into a vessel B to form a fluidized bed C, which is further fluidized by the passage therethrough of inert gas, e.g. steam or air, from fan D, the fine particles being thereby separated from the coarse, and being carried away in suspension through openings F. The temperature is maintained slightly above 100 DEG C. by control of the water supplied. Unhydrated residue is removed through rotary valve J. Openings F are formed with deflecting plates F2 to impart a circular motion to the gases, the cyclone action resulting causing the lime to separate; it is removed through opening H. The gases pass to a fan washer L and thence to a baffle-box M, the water separating being returned to the conveyer A, and the gases passing to the inlet of fan D. When the plant is started, air may be circulated, to be later replaced by the steam evolved. Excess air and steam may be voided through valve P.
