[Class 86] Apparatus for mixing concrete, &c., by dividing a stream of materials and then re-uniting it comprises layers of funnel like containers arranged so that the outlet of each opens into the inlet of more than two similar containers in a layer below, the materials being finally collected together. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement of frusto-pyramid containers 4, 5, 6 each container opening into four in the layer below, the materials being collected in a trough 7. The apparatus may operate as a batch mixer, or as continuous discharge apparatus, and water may be fed in through sprays at some stage in the mixing, the containers then being vibrated to assist the passage of the pasty materials through them. A modification of the apparatus, Fig. 5, is a batch mixer provided with containers 10, 11, &c., mounted on rubber cushions 21 in a housing 16. The containers are arranged so that the spaces between containers in each layer, e.g., 13, form similar containers when the layer is inverted. A gravity operated valve such as a ball 14 closes each of the outlets of these inverted containers. In operation, the materials are fed into the machine at the top, from where they pass through containers 15, 10, 11, &c., to the bottom, water being sprayed into the machine at some suitable stage. The housing and containers are then inverted, and the semi-mixed materials pass back, the gravity operated valves falling to close the previously used containers such as 15, and open the others. The mixed material then passes out through the inverted top of the housing. The containers may be vibrated as for example by eccentric weights 19 mounted on a rotating shaft 18 passing through the housing. More than one such shaft may be provided, and may pass vertically through the containers. The containers may be polygonal in shape.
