Abstract

In a process of separating dl-threonine from mixtures thereof with dl-allothreonine said mixture is reacted with a solution of sodium or sodium hydroxide in alcohol. The dl-sodium salt of threonine thus precipitated is separated and converted into the free acid, e.g. by treating the sodium salt with hydrohalic acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid, diluting with alcohol, precipitating sodium halide and treating the hydrochloride with a weak base such as aniline or pyridine; or by treating the sodium salt with glacial acetic acid or a hydrogen ion exchange resin. Detailed examples are given.
