637,420. Glass fibres. SOC. ANON. DES MANUFACTURES DES GLACES ET PRODUITS CHIMIQUES DE ST.-GOBAIN, CHAUNY, & CIREY. Dec. 31, 1947, No. 35346. Convention date, June 4, 1946. Addition to 610,845. [Class 56] [Also in Groups XXVII and XXIX] In the process of drawing glass &c. fibres according to the parent Specification, the combustion chamber is supplied with air preheated by circulation in passages whose walls are in contact with the gases in the chamber. The air may be fed through a coiled pipe within the chamber, or, as shown, from a supply pipe 9 through annular spaces 8, 7 surrounding the chamber 1, passages 11, 12, an annular conduit 13 and a slot 14 ; a direct feed from the space 7 is also provided by orifices 10 having axial fuel nozzles 16. After preheating of the chamber 1 by combustion of an air-propane mixture therein, air and fuel are fed in at 9 and 16, the valve 19 (see Group XXIX) being lifted from its seat by its nut 29 so that an upward flow is established, passing near the ignition plug 21 ; the device is operated in this way until it is fully heated, and the flow is then diverted to the outlet orifice 3 by releasing the valve 19 on to its seat ; the valve may then act as an excess pressure relief valve, or may be locked closed by screwing the nut 29 upwards against a strap 23. A glass rod 32 for attenuation into fibres is fed in through a sleeve 25 at the centre of the valve. In a modification, a surrotmding space corresponding to 7 has an annular inlet around the orifice 3, the pipe 9 and space 8 being omitted ; the heated air is withdrawn from the space 7 by a compressor (an outlet may also be provided permitting part of the burnt gases in the chamber 1 to mix with the heated air as it is withdrawn), and forced through a carburetter (see Group XXVII) into a pipe leading to the lower part of the chamber 1 ; the glass rod 32 enters through a close fitting hole in the wall of the chamber 1 and a larger hole in an internal partition, air pressure being applied in the space between the wall and the partition.
