Abstract
637,263. Resilient mountings. PIRELLI SOC. PER AZIONI. Sept. 23, 1947, No. 25864. Convention date, July 5, 1944. [Class 108 (iii)] In a resilient mounting of the kind in which the resilient element is composed of rubber or the like possessing the characteristic of becoming progressively stiffer under increasing load of compression, the resilient element is so shaped that it has substantial lateral deformation under load and there are disposed about it, as integers of the mounting, a rigid surface or surfaces so positioned as in the unloaded condition of the mounting to be spaced from the surface of the element, said surface or surfaces comprising or including a surface or surfaces placed laterally abreast of the element, but in spaced relation to the periphery thereof so as to lie in the path of the periphery as the element deforms laterally under load, which rigid surface or surfaces is or are so shaped and positioned as by controlling the deformation of the resilient element, to force a change or changes in the kind of stress to which it is subjected as the load on the mounting is progressively increased, according to the requirements of a predetermined deformation diagram in respect of the mounting. In the arrangement shown, a suitably shaped surface 4 of. a disc-shaped terminal member 1 abuts axially thereof an annular rubber block 3 which during deflection of the mounting, peripherally engages an inner surface 5 of an annular terminal member 2. The rubber block 3 is provided with a rigid bushing 3a. On deflection from the unloaded position (shown in dotted lines), by progressively increasing axial load on the member 1, the nature of the stress to which the block 3 is subjected, for a given shape of block, alters in dependence upon the respective shapes of the surfaces 4 and 5. Other arrangements (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) disclose alternative shapes for the surfaces 4 and 5. Specification 621,693 is referred to.
