Abstract

621,693. Resilient mountings. PIRELLI SOC. PER AZIONI. July 11, 1946, No. 20800. Convention date, March 18, 1943. [Class 108 (iii)] In a resilient mounting of the type in which a resilient element is composed of a material which becomes stiffer under increasing compressive load and is devoid of internal embedded members, and in which relative movement of the terminal members is a simple rectilinear movement in a direction parallel to the direction of application of the load, as the load on the mounting increases the element passes through two successive phases of stress of respectively different kind, the phase later passed through being such that the deformability per unit increase of load is greater than that which would result if the kind of stress. that obtained during the first phase obtained also during the second. In the construction shown, an annular rubber block 1 is bonded to an outer metal bush 3 carried by an annular rigid supporting member 3<SP>1</SP>, and to an inner metal bush 2 carried by a supported member 4. On deflection from the unloaded position (shown), the member 4 engages the upper surface of the rubber block which is thereby loaded predominantly in compression. On further deflection, the predominant stress in the rubber becomes shearflexion, with a corresponding decrease in the deformability per unit increase of load. Two rubber blocks may be connected in parallel between the supported and supporting members.
