[Class 89 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] A device for reinforcing a member against splitting, or for connecting together two or more members, particularly timbers, comprises two headed shanks to be inserted from opposite ends of a through hole the shanks being toothed to interlock and the shanks being bent initially so that the toothed portion is inclined to the remainder as shown in Fig. 3. The head 6 has a bevel 12 that may be forced to some extent into the timber to seal the hole against moisture. A taper neck 8 also has the same function. The shank 5 has its end portion of reduced diameter and flattened and on the flat surface undercut teeth 9 are formed. The shank ends in a bevel 11. When two of the devices are inserted from opposite ends of the hole and pressed together the teeth interlock, and the combined diameter of the toothed part of the shank is then greater than that of the part 5.
