Abstract

766,137. Rivets. HUCK MANUFACTURING CO. July 26, 1954 [Sept. 8, 1953], No. 21724/54. Class 89 (1). [Also in Group XXII] A rivet comprises a pin 1, Fig. 1, with a head 5 and a stem having a plain cylindrical part 6 followed by two grooves 9, a break-neck 11 and a pull-stem 13, and a collar 14 having a bore 15 and an exterior formed of conical surfaces 17, 18, the collar being swaged into the grooves 9 by a tool 25. Part 6 may be an interference fit in the aligned bores 2, 7 of members 3, 4 to be joined together, and may be of the same length or slightly longer than the bore length, the collar having a counterbore 16 to accommodate such extension of part 6. Stem 13 is gripped in jaws 23 of the tool and surface 17 of the collar engages surface 21 of the tool-anvil 20. As the jaws are pulled away from the anvil, the pin is first pulled through bores 2, 7 and then the collar moves through anvil-bore 22 and is deformed into the grooves 9 as shown in Fig. 3, a final pull breaking off stem 13 at neck 11.
