Abstract
636,762. Making electric discharge tubes; casting composite articles. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. July 28, 1947, No. 20279. Convention date, Jan. 27, 1942. [Classes 83 (i) and 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XL (a)] An anode unit for an X-ray tube comprising a glass-to-metal sealing element 16 made of metal having the same coefficient of expansion as glass 22 partly embedded in a copper supporting rod 16 by casting, said cast joint forming the sole connection between said element and rod. In a crucible 12 is placed a carbon block 13 having an inclined face on which is placed an anode target disc 14 of refractory metal and a slug 10 of copper. On this is placed a thimble 16 of cobalt-nickel-iron alloy having an external flange 17, containing a weight 18 of a metal which will not melt when the copper is melted, and surrounded by a carbon sleeve 15 which will limit the depth to which the thimble will sink when the copper melts. After heating and cooling, the weight 18, the composite casting, and the block 13 are removed from the crucible, the flange 17 is turned off, the sleeve 15 removed and the casting machined, Fig. 1, and united to the glass part 22. The part 16 may be made of the alloy known under the Registered Trade Mark " Kovar," and the parts 12, 13, 15 and 18 may be re-used.
