Abstract

636,615. Making gilled tubes; deforming helical coils. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. and TREMLETT, C. A. July 3, 1947, No. 17583. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] [Also in Group XXVII] A heat exchange fin, e.g. for cooling the cylinder of an internal-combustion engine or the anode of an electric discharge device, is made by winding a helix of wire of high thermal conductivity, flattening it so that a substantial portion of each half-turn is straight and the straight portions 3, 4 of successive half-turns lie alternately in two parallel planes, unless the helix was so formed during its initial winding, and, finally, deforming the flattened helix so that those planes are moved closer together and the curved portions 5 of each half-turn lie in planes at angles of about 45 degrees to the planes in which the straight portions lie. The helix may be further bent around a tubular, member so that its axis is helical or annular. Specification 636,614 is referred to.
