Abstract

635,480. Thermionic valves. ROBINSON, E. Y., and METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. July 11, 1946, No. 20770. [Class 39 (i)] A multiple thermionic valve in which all the lead-in wires pass through the base end comprises a mixer section and a local oscillator section located in the same envelope on either side of a common indirectly-heated cathode 1, Fig. 1, of flattened cross-section, the electrodes being supported between upper and lower insulating plates 14, e.g. of mica, and the two sets of electrodes being screened from one another by an electrostatic screen 11. The mixer section is a hexode and the oscillator section is a triode. A strap 8 connects grids 5, 7 of the mixer and a further strap (not shown) is provided between grids 2 and 6. The supporting posts of grid 4 are coplanar with the cathode 1 and the edges 12 of the screen 11 are bent so as to project between the cathode and the posts. The grid 2 of the triode is bulged towards the cathode 1 as shown so that its support posts 2a can be spaced away from posts 4a of grid 4. The whole electrode assembly is mounted within a can 10 secured to the plates 14 which engage the glass envelope of the device. Additional screening means may be provided between the lead-in wires at the base of the valve, and electrode posts at the top of the valve, which may be separate plates or extensions of the screen 11. The additional screens may screen the grid electrodes of the two electrode systems from one another, and/or the heater extremities or lead-in wires from some of the electrodes, or the input electrodes from the output electrodes. In a modification, the mixer-oscillator sets of electrodes are replaced by an amplifier combined with a double diode. The diode anodes are strips placed edge-on to the cathode. The Provisional Specification refers in addition to a mixeroscillator in which the mixer is a heptode, and to a triode, tetrode, or pentode amplifier combined with a diode or double diode. The grid wires and side rod supports form a ladder-like construction.
