Abstract

635,252. Gas burners. UDYLITE CORPORATION. Aug. 7, 1947, No. 21532. Convention date, Nov. 25, 1943. [Class 75 (i)] A gas torch adapted for welding thermoplastic materials comprises an elongated combustion chamber having gas and air inlets at one end and an exhaust outlet at the other end, and the gas inlet pipe is surrounded by a cup for deflecting the air which flows around it, and/or the exhaust end is provided with ironing means and has at least two exhaust outlets spaced circumferentially, one outlet being controlled by a valve whereby the proportion of exhaust gases leaving by the two outlets may be varied. Gas is passed into the combustion chamber 12 through a nozzle 3 surrounded by a cup 5, and air supplied through a nozzle 7 passes into a distributing chamber 10 surrounding the end of the chamber 12 and flows into the latter where it is deflected by the cup 5. The hot combustion products are exhausted through an orifice 13, of variable size controlled by a ring 15, and a pair of orifices 14, the gases exhausted through the orifice 13 being applied for softening the thermoplastic being welded. The gases passing through the orifices 14 are utilized for heating an ironing tip 2. A jacket 16 is provided for cooling water. An alternative ironing tip is described which is provided with a single, axial exhaust outlet.
