Abstract

A gramophone record is manufactured from a material comprising shellac as a thermoplastic ingredient and a bituminous substance which is not a coal tar derivative. The bituminous substance may be a natural bitumen such as that known as "Gilsonite" (Registered Trade Mark) or may be derived from the refining of petroleum oils such as substances known as "Iranolins" (Registered Trade Mark) and is said to prevent the separation of wax from the shellac during record manufacture thereby avoiding stains. Examples of composition comprising shellac, pitch, carbon black, slate powder, congo gum, rosin, and copal are given, the bituminous substance being added to provide one per cent or less by weight of the material.
