Abstract

A shoe bottom filling composition consists essentially of a granular resilient material such as cork, and swollen flocs of Congo or Zanzibar gum. A wetting vehicle, sleeking agent and an adhesive may be added. 12 lbs. of finely powdered un-run Congo fossil gum are swelled and dispersed in 40 3/4 lbs. of Tall oil, and added to a solution consisting of 84 lbs. ethyl acetate, 25 lbs. petroleum naphtha substantially free from aromatic hydrocarbons, 10 lbs. dibutyl phthalate, and 18 lbs. of film scrap. With this is mixed 50 lbs. petroleum naphtha, and 90 lbs. powdered resin obtained as a residue in the refining of wood rosin, and which is composed of 50 per cent or more of a resinous material substantially insoluble in gasoline, but which is soluble in the ethyl acetate to form an adhesive. 100 lbs. of this binder is kneaded with 30 gallons of granulated cork.
