Abstract

Free flowing granular sodium hexametaphosphate for use as a water softener is produced by "humidifying" the finely-divided phosphate particles mixed, if desired, with an alkalinity adjusting agent, agitating to form agglomerates, screening to the desired size and rapidly removing moisture by drying at a temperature between 40 DEG and 90 DEG C. at an absolute pressure of 8-10 mm. of mercury. "Humidifying" includes the addition of water by a spray, humidified air, or by hydrated salts. Suitable alkalinity adjusting agents are soda ash, sodium sulphate, bisulphate, metasilicate and pyrophosphate, trisodium phosphate, soaps, sulphonated or sulphated and other non-saponaceous detergents, or mixtures of these, added up to 10 per cent by weight of sodium hexametaphosphate. Suitable alkalinity adjusting agents are soda ash, sodium sulphate, bisulphate, metasilicate and pyrophosphate, trisodium phosphate, soaps, sulphonated, sulphated or other non saponaceous detergents, or mixtures of these, added up to 10 per cent by weight of sodium hexametaphosphate. A pH value of 7.5-8.5 in a 1 per cent solution in water is referred to.
