Abstract

633,028. Fishing. BURNEY, Sir C. D. Sept. 18, 1947, No. 25469. [Class 48] A trawl net or a set of side by side nets 3, 3 is towed from a vessel by a main cable 1 attached to the centre of the head rope 7 and branch cables 4, to which are attached sheering devices, and which run from a point on the main cable between the vessel and the net to the sides of the head rope. Cables 9, 13, provided with sinkers 14, connect the main and branch cables to the foot rope 8. Wheels having their planes of rotation parallel to the direction of motion of the net are interposed in the foot rope. Wire reinforcement of the cod ends 25 is connected to the towing points of the net. Floats counteract the weight of the reinforcement and allow the cod ends to stream at a height equal to half the depth of the net mouth. The sheering devices 16 are in accordance with Specification 632,877, and are connected to the cables 4 at or in front of their junction with the cables 13. In a modification the sheering devices are dispensed with and normal otters are inserted in the cables 13. In a further modification the nets 3, 3 are spaced apart. According to the Provisional Specification the belly of the net has an area consisting of resilient longitudinal members which permits escape of stones and debris caught up in the net.
